This Startup’s Plant-Based Film Keeps Produce Fresh 3x Longer, and They Just Raised $1M

A Green Leap in Fresh Produce Packaging
Biotech startup PeelON, founded in 2020 by Taraka Ramji Moturu and Venkata Ravi Sankar Ummidi, has raised USD 1 million in seed funding. The round was led by GrowX Ventures with participation from Boston Venture Group, Clean Energy Venture Group, and Climate Angels.
The funding will help PeelON to:
  • Expand research, development, and production facilities in Visakhapatnam
  • Build sales and regulatory teams in India and the US
  • Launch targeted marketing campaigns for fresh produce such as leafy greens, bananas, and grapes
  • Begin global regulatory filings and certification processes
PeelON develops compostable, plant-based films that extend the shelf life of fruits and vegetables by up to three times. Its flagship products—PeelON-Fresh (bulk shipment liners) and PeelON-Retail+ (retail-ready antimicrobial bags) are already in commercial use across India and international markets.
Currently valued at around USD 7.9 million, the startup is building a production capacity of 30 tonnes per month and holds multiple patents for its material science innovations.
At Startup Veda, we highlight founders who merge science and sustainability to create scalable impact. PeelON is a powerful example of how deep-tech innovation can reduce food waste while replacing single-use plastics.
